Minneapolis Releases Video of January Shooting Involving Federal Officers

Summary

Minneapolis has released footage of a January incident where federal officers pursued and shot a Venezuelan man, leading to suspensions and an investigation into the officers' conduct.

The city of Minneapolis has released video footage from a city-owned security camera capturing a January 14, 2026, incident involving federal officers. The video shows officers pursuing a Venezuelan man to his residence, where another Venezuelan man was shot during the confrontation. Both individuals were initially charged with assaulting an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, but the charges were later dropped due to evidence inconsistencies.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has placed two ICE officers on administrative leave pending an internal investigation into allegations of providing untruthful testimony under oath. DHS stated that "lying under oath is a serious federal offense" and that the U.S. Attorney's Office is actively investigating these false statements.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey commented on the situation, stating that the video makes it clear that the federal government's account of the incident does not match the facts.

State and county prosecutors have expressed frustration over the federal authorities' refusal to share information on this and other incidents involving federal officers. They have filed a lawsuit seeking access to evidence necessary for independent investigations.

Both Venezuelan men are currently free while they pursue legal status in the United States. They were initially released before the criminal charges were dropped, then briefly taken back into custody by ICE for alleged immigration violations, and subsequently released again under court order.
