Diana Taurasi Comments on Auriemma-Staley Final Four Confrontation
Former UConn star Diana Taurasi discusses the heated exchange between coaches Geno Auriemma and Dawn Staley during the Final Four.
In the aftermath of a heated exchange between UConn's Geno Auriemma and South Carolina's Dawn Staley during the Final Four, former UConn standout Diana Taurasi offered her perspective. Taurasi, who played under Auriemma from 2000 to 2004 and was teammates with Staley during the 2004 Olympics, emphasized the competitive nature of both coaches.
"I know it's two really competitive people from Philly," Taurasi said during an interview with SiriusXM. "So you can put whatever label you want and you can say whatever you want about the situation last night, but to me it was two people competing at the highest level that have tremendous respect for each other."
The incident occurred as South Carolina secured a 62-48 victory over UConn, ending the Huskies' 54-game winning streak and advancing to the national championship game. Auriemma approached Staley in the final seconds, leading to a tense exchange that required intervention from team staff. Auriemma later apologized, stating, "There's no excuse for how I handled the end of the game vs. South Carolina. It's unlike what I do and what our standard is here at Connecticut."
Reflecting on the rivalry, Taurasi remarked, "Hey, look, it reminds me of when I was in college and Tennessee was at the top of the mountain. You want to knock them down. You want to be the better team. You want to be able to beat them in the biggest games." She praised Staley's achievements, noting, "I think what Dawn has done at South Carolina is remarkable, amazing. The culture, that basketball program that she's really built from the ground up." Taurasi concluded by affirming the enduring nature of the UConn-South Carolina rivalry, stating, "It's a great rivalry. I think it's here to stay."
