Minister of State for Labour and Employment Resigns Amid Election Preparations

Nkeiruka Onyejeocha has resigned from her position as Minister of State for Labour and Employment, expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve in his administration. In a statement shared on her official X account on Friday, Onyejeocha announced her decision, describing it as the end of a significant chapter in her public service career. She emphasized her continued commitment to national development, stating, "This is not an end but a new beginning. I remain committed to service, to progress, and to building the Nigeria we all deserve." Her resignation aligns with President Tinubu's directive requiring political appointees intending to contest in the 2027 general elections to step down by March 31, 2026, in accordance with the Electoral Act 2026. Onyejeocha, who represented the Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2023, is reportedly preparing to seek re-election to her former seat. She also expressed appreciation to the staff of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment for their dedication and professionalism during her tenure, noting their collective efforts in advancing policies aimed at protecting workers' rights, promoting workplace safety, and expanding employment opportunities.
