Human rights advocate and Mtetezi Grassroot Convener Francis Awino has called for increased civic engagement and the establishment of robust accountability mechanisms in governance. Speaking at a public forum, Awino highlighted the necessity of bridging the gap between theoretical education and practical governance experiences, particularly for political science students at the University of Nairobi.
He proposed creating structured platforms where students can interact directly with activists, practitioners, and community leaders to gain practical insights that complement their academic studies. Reflecting on the 2024 Finance Bill protests, Awino noted that early concerns raised by activists about the bill's economic impact were not adequately addressed through dialogue, leading to nationwide demonstrations fueled by public frustration over economic and representation issues.
Awino criticized existing systems for lacking transparency and oversight, emphasizing that public institutions must undergo regular scrutiny to maintain public trust. He suggested that contested leadership outcomes should be subject to independent reviews to ensure credibility and protect public confidence in governance structures.
Citing Petition No. 772 of 2025 filed against Anne Kanake, Awino underscored the importance of accessing audited financial records and ensuring accountability in managing workers' funds. He warned that failing to uphold accountability in leadership and institutions risks long-term erosion of public trust, drawing parallels to governance challenges in prolonged administrations elsewhere.
While acknowledging the impact of past protests, including loss of life, Awino emphasized the importance of non-violent engagement and structured dialogue in addressing grievances. He announced plans to initiate formal discussions with law enforcement agencies and the Registrar of Trade Unions to resolve outstanding governance concerns through institutional channels.
Awino concluded by calling for unity and the peaceful pursuit of justice, urging Kenyans to remain committed to truth, accountability, and national cohesion.
