U.S. Escalates Military Actions Against Iran Amid Leadership Shake-Up

Summary

The United States has intensified its military operations against Iran, targeting civilian infrastructure, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed top Army officials during the ongoing conflict.

The United States has intensified its military operations against Iran by targeting civilian infrastructure. On April 2, 2026, U.S. forces conducted an airstrike on a major bridge connecting Tehran to the suburb of Karaj, marking a significant escalation in the conflict. The U.S. justified the strike by claiming the bridge was used by Iranian forces to transport missiles and parts covertly to western Iran. The bridge partially collapsed as a result.

In response, Iran launched multiple attacks across the region, including a drone strike that caused fires at Kuwait’s Mina al-Ahmadi oil refinery. Additionally, Iran fired missiles at Tel Aviv, triggering Israeli air defense systems and leaving four people lightly injured. Fresh explosions were also heard in Jerusalem after the military warned of incoming fire.

Amid the ongoing conflict, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, along with Gen. David Hodne and Maj. Gen. William Green Jr. The official reasons for these dismissals remain undisclosed. Gen. Christopher LaNeve, a former aide to Hegseth, has been named acting chief of staff.

The conflict has disrupted vital oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, raising Brent crude oil prices to $109, over 50% higher than before the war. The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on a Bahrain-proposed resolution to ensure the safe passage of ships through the strait. However, opposition from permanent members like China, Russia, and France complicates approval, particularly around the use of force.

The human toll continues to rise, with over 1,900 deaths reported in Iran, 19 in Israel, and significant casualties in Lebanon, Gulf states, and the West Bank. Lebanon, where Israel is fighting Hezbollah, has seen more than 1,300 deaths and over a million displaced.
