United Airlines Increases Checked Bag Fees Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Summary

United Airlines has raised its checked baggage fees by $10, citing increased fuel expenses following recent geopolitical events.

United Airlines announced an increase in checked baggage fees, effective for tickets purchased from April 3. The fee for the first checked bag on most domestic flights will rise to $45 if paid in advance and $50 if paid within 24 hours of departure. The second checked bag fee will increase to $55 and $60, respectively.

This adjustment follows a significant surge in jet fuel prices, which have risen over 80% since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, disrupting global oil supplies.

JetBlue Airways similarly increased its checked bag fees earlier this week, with the first bag now costing $39 during off-peak times and $49 during peak travel periods.

United Airlines stated that customers who purchased tickets before April 3 will not be affected by the new fees.

Certain travelers, including United Chase credit card holders, MileagePlus Premier members, active military personnel, and those traveling in premium cabins, will continue to receive free checked baggage allowances.

The airline industry is adjusting to increased operational costs due to rising fuel prices, with baggage fee hikes being one of the measures implemented to offset these expenses.
