President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has appointed new deputy ministers, calling on them to prioritize the needs of ordinary Namibians and uphold the sixth National Development Plan (NDP6) with a focus on social justice.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has taken a bold step by appointing a new minister in the Office of the President, seven deputy ministers, and an adviser to the Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs during a ceremony at State House on Thursday. In a country where the working class and marginalized communities have too often been neglected, she emphasized the urgent need for measurable progress in infrastructure development, healthcare, safety and security, job creation, and access to public services, as outlined in the sixth National Development Plan (NDP6).
"The eighth administration has been given a clear mandate by the people of Namibia to deliver measurable progress in infrastructure development, healthcare, safety and security, job creation, and access to public services. These are not abstract commitments. They are your key performance indicators, and they will define your tenure as such," she stated, highlighting the administration's obligation to the people, not the elite.
Nandi-Ndaitwah urged the new appointees to uphold values of pragmatism, integrity, accountability, meritocracy, and inclusivity—principles essential for dismantling entrenched inequalities and ensuring that government serves all Namibians, not just the privileged few. She reminded them of the immense responsibilities associated with public office, a role that must be used to uplift the most vulnerable.
"The responsibilities you assume today are weighty, and they must not be taken lightly. Public office is a sacred duty," she said, underscoring the need for servant leadership.
Hans Haikali, the newly appointed Deputy Minister of Works and Transport and Etayi constituency councillor, recognized the seriousness of his new role and expressed his commitment to fulfilling the duties assigned to him, signaling hope for those demanding real change.
"For now, I don't want to promise too much. But what is clear is that we have the NDP6 to fulfil," Haikali said, acknowledging the people's expectations.
Edward Wambo, appointed as Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security and Rehoboth Urban East councillor, stressed the need to balance his roles as councillor and deputy minister, a reminder of the importance of grassroots representation in government.
"There is no way that we can compromise on our mandate as a constituency councillor. That being said, we are joining a system where we must assist the minister and the president. All of us are striving for a better Namibia," Wambo said, reaffirming his commitment to collective progress.
The newly appointed deputy ministers, all elected during the 2025 regional council and local authority elections, include Theresia Brandt (Ministry of Justice and Labour Relations), Anselm Marungu (Ministry of Environment and Tourism), Wenzel Kavaka (Ministry of Information and Communication Technology), and Hambeleleni Ndjaleka (Ministry of Health and Social Services). Their appointments signal a potential shift toward a more equitable and people-focused governance.
