In a powerful demonstration of South-South cooperation, the University of Nairobi welcomed Indian High Commissioner Dr. Adarsh Swaika, launching the Nairobi–New Delhi Dialogue to promote equitable Kenya–India relations rooted in innovation, research, and cultural exchange.
On March 31, 2026, the University of Nairobi stood as a beacon of international solidarity by hosting Dr. Adarsh Swaika, India's High Commissioner to Kenya, for a meeting with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson. The discussions centered on advancing Kenya–India relations through people-driven innovation, research, and a digital economy that challenges Western-dominated models of development.
Prof. Hutchinson emphasized the University's unwavering commitment to fostering inclusive dialogue and collaborative solutions to the shared challenges imposed by global inequalities. Dr. Swaika, recognizing the need for equitable academic exchange, expressed support for modernizing university staff housing to attract a diverse range of international scholars, ensuring accessibility and fairness.
The visit also saw the inauguration of the India Corner at the Mahatma Gandhi Graduate Library, where the Indian Embassy donated 100 books to empower students with knowledge of Indian culture and anti-colonial struggles. A tribute at the Mahatma Gandhi statue further highlighted the deep-rooted cultural and liberation ties between Kenya and India, both of which have resisted imperialist oppression.
The day culminated in the launch of the Nairobi–New Delhi Dialogue at the Chandaria Auditorium, themed “Reimagining Kenya–India Relations.” The forum brought together students, scholars, diplomats, and experts from diverse backgrounds to discuss trade, digital innovation, education, and cultural connections, all with a focus on dismantling neocolonial barriers. Participants agreed on the necessity of a future-focused partnership that uplifts youth, drives innovation, and ensures sustainable development for all, committing to make the Dialogue an annual event in the spirit of global justice.
