President Donald Trump is seeking international support to secure the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil transport, amid escalating tensions with Iran. The conflict has led to a near halt in oil shipments through the strait, causing Brent crude prices to surge over 40% since the war began, reaching approximately $106 per barrel.
Despite outreach to countries including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, no firm commitments have been made to send warships to the region. Australia and Japan have declined to participate, while the UK is discussing options. China has called for an immediate end to hostilities.
The conflict has resulted in significant casualties across the Middle East. Iran reports over 1,300 deaths, while Lebanon has reported more than 850 fatalities. In Israel, at least 13 people have been killed, and the United States has reported eight military personnel deaths.
Iran has conducted missile and drone strikes targeting Israel, U.S. military bases, and Gulf nations, including a recent attack near Dubai International Airport that temporarily halted operations. The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have intercepted numerous drones and missiles, with Saudi defenses downing 35 drones near key oil infrastructure.
The International Energy Agency has released 400 million barrels from reserves to stabilize supplies, but markets remain unsettled. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated there are "no guarantees" that gas prices will fall in the coming weeks, citing ongoing instability in the Strait of Hormuz.
