Iranian Drone Strike Temporarily Halts Dubai International Airport Operations
A drone attack near Dubai International Airport led to a temporary suspension of flights, with black smoke observed over the terminals.
A drone attack near the main terminals of Dubai International Airport led to a temporary suspension of operations on Sunday morning. The Dubai Media Office stated: "For the safety of passengers, airport staff, and airline crew, operations at Dubai International (DXB) have been temporarily suspended." Black smoke was observed rising over the airport following a loud explosion, according to multiple eyewitness accounts. Airport operations have since resumed.
Euronews correspondent Lily Douse, who was on board an Emirates flight to Cape Town during the incident, reported that passengers were evacuated to an underground area within the terminal for safety. After approximately one hour, they reboarded the aircraft, which then departed without further issues.
Authorities have not provided details on whether the attack resulted in any interceptions or damage at the airport, which is among the world's busiest for international travel. In response to the incident, Dubai activated its air defense systems.
This attack occurred shortly after Iran's interim leadership council announced that neighboring countries would no longer be targeted unless an attack on Iran originated from those nations.
