Actor John Alford Dies in Prison Two Months After Sexual Assault Conviction
John Alford, known for his roles in 'Grange Hill' and 'London's Burning,' was found dead in his prison cell on March 13, 2026, following his conviction for sexually assaulting two teenage girls.
John Alford, the British actor renowned for his roles in the BBC series 'Grange Hill' and ITV's 'London's Burning,' was found dead in his prison cell on March 13, 2026. He was 54 years old. Alford, whose birth name was John James Shannon, had been serving an eight-and-a-half-year sentence at HMP Bure in Norfolk after being convicted in January for sexually assaulting two teenage girls in 2022. A spokesperson for the Prison Service stated: "John Shannon died in prison on 13 March 2026. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate." Alford's acting career began with his portrayal of Robbie Wright in 'Grange Hill' from 1985 to 1990, followed by his role as Billy Ray in 'London's Burning' between 1993 and 1998. In addition to his television work, he achieved three Top 30 hits on the UK singles chart in 1996. His conviction stemmed from incidents in April 2022, where he was found guilty of sexually assaulting two girls, aged 14 and 15, at a house in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. During the trial at St Albans Crown Court in September 2025, Alford denied the charges, reportedly shouting, "Wrong, I didn't do this," upon hearing the verdict. Chris White from the Crown Prosecution Service commented on the case, stating that Alford was "fully aware of the girls' ages, yet he chose to exploit them."
