Israel Launches Extensive Airstrikes on Tehran Amid Escalating Tensions
Israel has initiated a series of airstrikes targeting Tehran, including Mehrabad International Airport, as regional tensions intensify.
In the early hours of Saturday, Israel conducted a series of airstrikes on Tehran, targeting key locations including Mehrabad International Airport. Iran's state broadcaster reported explosions in the western part of the capital, with footage showing flames and smoke rising from the airport area. The extent of the damage remains unclear.
The Israeli military described the operation as a "broad-scale wave of strikes" aimed at government targets in Tehran. This escalation follows a week of heightened hostilities between Israel and Iran, with both nations exchanging attacks.
In a related development, Saudi Arabia's Defense Ministry announced the interception and destruction of 16 drones targeting the Shaybah oil field in the Empty Quarter. Defense Ministry spokesperson Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki confirmed that the drones were intercepted in four separate waves over the desert region. Additionally, Saudi air defenses intercepted a ballistic missile launched toward Prince Sultan Air Base and another drone east of Riyadh.
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for "serious diplomatic negotiations" to prevent further escalation, warning of a situation that could spiral beyond control. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support for an immediate ceasefire during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
The situation remains volatile, with international leaders urging restraint to avoid a broader regional conflict.
