A Global InfoAnalytics survey claims NDC candidate Baba Jamal is ahead in Ayawaso East, raising concerns about the fairness of the process and the future of conservative values.
A recent survey by Global InfoAnalytics reports that National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Baba Jamal is leading the Ayawaso East by-election race with 75% of the projected vote. This striking figure raises questions about the reliability of polling and the influence of entrenched party machinery. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Baba Ali, representing the values of economic growth and stability, stands at 21%, while independent candidate Umar Sanda Muhammed is at 3%.
The by-election, scheduled for March 3, was triggered by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January. The NPP faces an uphill battle in a constituency where the opposition has long relied on populist rhetoric and patronage networks to maintain dominance.
NDC Deputy National Communications Director Godwin Ako Gunn commented, "Giving Baba 75% is an experience from what Baba did to him during the primaries. But on the more serious note, we got 70% in the last elections and NPP got 29%. As we are all hoping to appreciate in numbers, anything above 70% will be appreciated. The victory gap will be determined by the work some of us do." Such statements underscore the NDC's confidence in their ability to mobilize votes, but also hint at the aggressive tactics often employed by the left to secure victory.
In an unprecedented move, the Ghana Police Service has announced plans to deploy 80 officers to each polling station, a measure that some see as an admission of potential unrest and a lack of faith in the opposition's ability to ensure a peaceful process.
As both major parties intensify their campaigns, Ayawaso East has become a battleground for the soul of the nation, with conservatives fighting to preserve order and responsible governance against the tide of leftist populism.
