Trump Suggests Potential 'Friendly Takeover' of Cuba Amid Economic Crisis
President Donald Trump has proposed a 'friendly takeover' of Cuba, citing the island's severe economic difficulties and ongoing discussions between U.S. and Cuban officials.
President Donald Trump has suggested the possibility of a "friendly takeover" of Cuba, highlighting the island nation's economic struggles and ongoing dialogues between U.S. and Cuban officials. Speaking to reporters on Friday before departing for Texas, Trump stated, "The Cuban government is talking with us. They have no money. They have no anything right now. But they're talking with us."
The President's remarks come amid heightened tensions following the U.S. military operation in Venezuela, which led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, a close ally of Cuba. Subsequently, the U.S. intensified economic pressure on Cuba, including an oil blockade that has significantly impacted the island's energy supply. This blockade has resulted in widespread electricity outages and disruptions to essential services.
Cuban officials have condemned the U.S. actions, describing them as collective punishment. Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos de Cossio stated, "Lack of fuel harms transportation, medical services, schooling, energy, production of food, the standard of living. Massive punishment is a crime."
The situation has also led to operational challenges in Cuba, such as waste collection issues in Havana due to fuel shortages. Only 44 of the city's 106 garbage trucks are currently operational, causing refuse to accumulate on streets and raising public health concerns.
While the U.S. administration has indicated a willingness to ease some restrictions, including allowing certain oil sales to Cuba's private sector, the overall embargo remains in effect. The Cuban government has expressed a desire for dialogue based on mutual respect and non-interference.
As the economic and humanitarian situation in Cuba deteriorates, the international community continues to monitor developments closely.
