President Trump discussed the potential supply of Patriot missile systems to Ukraine during the NATO summit in The Hague.
During the recent NATO summit in The Hague, President Donald Trump addressed the possibility of the United States supplying Patriot missile systems and munitions to Ukraine. In response to a Ukrainian reporter's inquiry, President Trump stated, "We're going to see" if Washington can provide these defense systems to assist Kyiv in its conflict with Russia.
President Trump also commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin's position, suggesting that Putin might prefer to resolve the ongoing situation. "I know one thing: He'd like to settle, he'd like to get out of this thing. It's a mess for him," Trump remarked to reporters in The Hague.
When questioned about Russia's potential intentions beyond Ukraine, President Trump acknowledged the possibility but did not provide a definitive assessment.
Addressing his interactions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, President Trump noted that engaging with President Putin has been more challenging. "Vladimir Putin has been more difficult. Frankly, I've had some problems with Zelensky," he stated, referencing his campaign pledge to end the conflict within 24 hours.
In a conversation with BBC Ukraine correspondent Myroslava Petsa, who inquired about the U.S. readiness to sell anti-air missile systems to Ukraine, President Trump expressed understanding of Ukraine's desire to acquire such defense systems. He mentioned the effectiveness of Patriot systems and indicated that the U.S. would consider making them available, noting their high demand and effectiveness.
President Trump also extended his regards to Petsa's husband, who is serving as a soldier in Ukraine.
The administration has faced internal discussions regarding the implementation of additional sanctions on Russia, with some officials expressing caution about potential impacts on diplomatic negotiations.
During the summit, President Trump met with President Zelensky, who expressed appreciation for U.S. actions in the Middle East and discussed the importance of acquiring American air defense systems to protect Ukrainian infrastructure and civilians. President Zelensky emphasized Ukraine's readiness to purchase this equipment and support American weapons manufacturers, highlighting the potential for co-production of drones to strengthen both nations.
