Phil Spencer Retires; Asha Sharma Appointed Microsoft Gaming CEO
Phil Spencer retires after 38 years at Microsoft; Asha Sharma, former CoreAI leader, steps in as new CEO of Microsoft Gaming.
Phil Spencer, who has led Microsoft's gaming division for 12 years, is retiring after a 38-year tenure at the company. He will be succeeded by Asha Sharma, previously the head of Microsoft's CoreAI division.
In her introductory message, Sharma emphasized a renewed commitment to Xbox's core fanbase and the development of iconic franchises. She also highlighted the importance of expanding gaming experiences across multiple platforms, stating that gaming "now lives across devices, not within the limits of any single piece of hardware."
Additionally, Matt Booty, formerly head of Xbox Game Studios, has been promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, reporting directly to Sharma.
These leadership changes come as Microsoft Gaming faces challenges, including a reported 9.5% decline in gaming revenue during the December quarter.
