Tesla Launches Robotaxi Service in Austin
Tesla has launched its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, marking a step in the company's autonomous vehicle initiatives.
Tesla initiated its robotaxi service on Monday in Austin, Texas, deploying approximately 20 vehicles. This launch follows previous statements by CEO Elon Musk regarding the timeline for autonomous vehicle deployment. In 2019, Musk predicted that Tesla would have over a million robotaxis on the road by the following year. However, as of June 2025, the company has introduced a limited number of robotaxis in Austin. The service operates with a safety monitor in the passenger seat to oversee the vehicle's performance. Following the launch, Tesla's stock experienced an 8.2 percent increase, adding $96 billion in market capitalization. Despite this initial success, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has contacted Tesla after reports of the robotaxis exhibiting erratic driving behavior, including entering oncoming traffic lanes. Musk has previously stated that the robotaxi business could significantly contribute to Tesla's future value, comparing it to an 'Airbnb on wheels.' The company plans to expand the service to other cities, but challenges remain in scaling the technology and obtaining regulatory approvals.
