An 18-year-old woman killed nine people, including herself, in a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, marking one of Canada's deadliest incidents in recent history.
The attack began at the suspect's residence, where she fatally shot her 39-year-old mother and 11-year-old stepbrother. She then proceeded to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where she killed five students and a teacher before taking her own life. The victims at the school included three 12-year-old female students, two male students aged 12 and 13, and a 39-year-old education assistant. Twenty-seven others were injured, with two in critical condition.
British Columbia Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald stated, "There was no specific targeting of any individuals. This suspect was, for lack of a better term, hunting. They were prepared and engaging anybody and everybody they could come into contact with."
Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to visit Tumbler Ridge today, accompanied by leaders of all opposition parties, in a show of national solidarity. Carney described the town as representing "the very best of Canada: resilient, compassionate and strong."
The community of Tumbler Ridge, a small town of approximately 2,700 residents, is mourning the loss. A vigil is planned outside the town hall, with residents expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy. The school, which serves 175 students from Grades 7 to 12, will remain closed for the rest of the week.
This incident is the deadliest mass shooting in Canada since the Nova Scotia attacks in 2020 and the deadliest school shooting since the École Polytechnique massacre in 1989.
The RCMP continues to investigate the motive behind the attack and the connections between the shooter and the victims. Authorities have not yet determined a motive or the connections between the shooter and the victims.
