SpaceX Crew-12 Mission Set to Restore Full ISS Staffing

Summary

NASA and SpaceX are preparing to launch the Crew-12 mission to the International Space Station, aiming to return the station's crew to its full complement after a recent medical evacuation.

NASA and SpaceX are preparing to launch the Crew-12 mission to the International Space Station (ISS), aiming to restore the station's crew to its full complement following a recent medical evacuation. The mission is scheduled to lift off no earlier than 5:15 a.m. ET on Friday, February 13, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The Crew-12 team comprises NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. Their arrival will increase the ISS crew from three to seven members, reinstating the standard staffing level.

This launch follows the early return of the Crew-11 mission in mid-January due to a medical issue involving an unidentified crew member. The premature departure left the ISS operating with a reduced crew of three.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman commented on the situation, stating, "NASA was ready. The team responded quickly and professionally, as did the teams across the agency, working closely with our commercial partners and executed a very safe return." He added that the affected astronaut is in stable condition.

The Crew-12 mission has experienced delays due to unfavorable weather conditions along the rocket's flight path. Initially set for February 11, the launch was postponed to February 13 to ensure optimal conditions for liftoff.

Upon arrival, the Crew-12 astronauts will undertake various research projects during their approximately eight-month stay. These include ultrasound scans to study changes in circulation and pharmaceutical research related to pneumonia-causing bacteria.

The mission also marks a significant milestone for the crew members. It will be the second spaceflight for Jessica Meir and Andrey Fedyaev, and the first for Jack Hathaway and Sophie Adenot.

NASA emphasizes the importance of maintaining a full crew on the ISS to maximize scientific research and operational efficiency. The agency continues to collaborate with commercial partners like SpaceX to ensure the success of missions like Crew-12.
