Asteroid 2024 YR4's Potential Lunar Impact in 2032 Could Illuminate Earth's Skies

Summary

Asteroid 2024 YR4, once considered a potential threat to Earth, now has a 4.3% chance of colliding with the Moon on December 22, 2032, potentially creating a bright flash visible from Earth and triggering meteor showers.

Asteroid 2024 YR4, discovered on December 27, 2024, initially raised concerns due to a 3% chance of impacting Earth in 2032. Subsequent observations have effectively ruled out any risk to our planet. However, the asteroid now has a 4.3% probability of colliding with the Moon on December 22, 2032.

Measuring approximately 53 to 67 meters in diameter, the asteroid's potential lunar impact could release energy equivalent to 6.5 million tons of TNT, resulting in a bright flash visible from Earth.

Simulations indicate that the impact would produce a flash lasting several minutes, with an infrared afterglow persisting for hours. Additionally, the collision could eject up to 100 million kilograms of lunar material toward Earth, potentially causing meteor showers lasting several days.

The Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Chile discovered 2024 YR4, and follow-up observations, including those from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, have refined its trajectory and size estimates.

While the likelihood of a lunar impact remains low, scientists view this event as a unique opportunity to study asteroid dynamics and planetary defense strategies.
