Somaliland Seeks Trade Agreement with Israel, Offers Mineral Resources
Somaliland anticipates finalizing a trade deal with Israel, offering access to its mineral wealth, following Israel's recognition of its independence.
Somaliland is poised to finalize a trade agreement with Israel, offering access to its mineral resources, following Israel's recent recognition of its independence. President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, speaking from Dubai during the World Government Summit, expressed optimism about the forthcoming partnership.
"At the moment, there is no trade, and there is no investment from Israel. But we are hoping 100% (for) their investment, their trade, and hopefully we will engage with the business people and the government of Israel soon," he stated.
Abdullahi highlighted Somaliland's rich resources, including minerals, oil, gas, marine products, agriculture, and energy sectors. He noted that Somaliland possesses meat, fish, and minerals that Israel needs, suggesting that trade could commence in these main sectors. In return, Somaliland seeks access to Israeli technology.
Somaliland claims vast reserves of lithium, essential for batteries and electric vehicles. In 2024, the Saudi Mining Company Kilomass secured an exploration deal for lithium and other critical minerals in the region.
Abdullahi expressed gratitude to Israel for being the first to recognize Somaliland's independence. While future military cooperation is anticipated, he clarified that establishing Israeli military bases has not been discussed. He accepted an invitation from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to visit Israel soon, though no date has been set.
The recognition by Israel has elicited criticism from Somalia, China, Turkey, Egypt, and the African Union. Despite this, Somaliland continues to engage with other nations, including the United Arab Emirates, with DP World investing significantly in the Berbera port. Abdullahi anticipates that the UAE and other countries will eventually recognize Somaliland.
