ADC Accuses Senate of Delaying Electoral Bill, Threatening 2027 Elections

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over the Senate's delay in passing the 2025 Electoral Bill, suggesting that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-dominated legislature may be intentionally stalling amendments designed to enhance election integrity. Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC's National Publicity Secretary, emphasized that some proposed amendments introduce new compliance and eligibility requirements that political parties need adequate time to understand and implement. He warned that insufficient time to study and comply with these provisions could have serious consequences for both political parties and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The ADC highlighted that a lack of clarity in the electoral framework could create potential challenges for opposition parties and complicate INEC's ability to issue clear guidelines within the required timeframe. The party cited the provision requiring INEC to publish election notices at least 360 days before a general election, noting that the time for adequate preparation is already limited. The ADC called on the National Assembly to pass the bill without further delay, adding that any postponement could threaten the integrity of the 2027 general election and undermine confidence in the process. The party also urged civil society organizations, international partners, and political parties committed to democratic governance to pressure the National Assembly to act swiftly. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has also accused the Senate of deliberately stalling the amendment process.
