Sony's Pioneering XEL-1 OLED TV: A Look Back at the 2007 Innovation

In 2007, Sony unveiled the XEL-1, the world's first OLED (organic light-emitting diode) television, featuring an 11-inch screen and a slim profile of approximately 3mm at its thinnest point. The XEL-1 offered a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and a native resolution of 960×540 pixels.

Initially launched in Japan in December 2007 at a retail price of ¥200,000, the XEL-1 became available in the United States in January 2008 for $2,500. Despite its high price and small screen size, the television was praised for its exceptional picture quality and innovative design.

Sony continued production of the XEL-1 until 2010, when it was discontinued in Japan due to regulatory changes requiring child protection features for web content. The XEL-1 remains a notable milestone in the evolution of television technology, paving the way for the widespread adoption of OLED displays in the years that followed.
