US Approves Major Arms Sales to Israel and Saudi Arabia Amid Rising Tensions with Iran

The United States has approved substantial arms sales to Israel and Saudi Arabia, totaling over $15 billion, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The State Department announced the approvals late Friday, following notifications to Congress earlier in the day.

Israel is set to receive $6.67 billion in military equipment, including 30 Apache attack helicopters valued at $3.8 billion, 3,250 light tactical vehicles worth $1.98 billion, power packs for armored personnel carriers at $740 million, and light utility helicopters for $150 million. Saudi Arabia's approved package amounts to $9 billion and comprises 730 Patriot missiles along with related equipment. The State Department stated that this sale aims to enhance Saudi Arabia's ability to meet current and future threats, thereby contributing to regional stability.

These arms deals coincide with President Donald Trump's ongoing efforts to negotiate a new nuclear agreement with Iran. The administration has increased its military presence in the region, deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and accompanying warships to the Middle East. President Trump has indicated a preference for diplomatic solutions but has not ruled out military action if necessary.

In a related development, Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered Russia's assistance in mediating between the United States and Iran. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia is prepared to facilitate negotiations to resolve issues concerning Iran's nuclear program and regional activities.
