Former Hostage Troufanov Details Captivity Ordeal in Gaza
Alexander 'Sasha' Troufanov recounts his 498-day captivity in Gaza, highlighting instances of abuse and his path to recovery.
Alexander "Sasha" Troufanov, a former hostage held in Gaza for 498 days, has shared harrowing details of his captivity, including instances of abuse and his ongoing recovery. In an interview with the BBC, Troufanov described being confined in a cage for approximately six weeks, during which a guard repeatedly attempted to coerce him into performing sexual acts. He also discovered a hidden camera recording his weekly showers, the only time he was permitted to clean himself. Despite noticing the camera, he felt compelled to shower, attempting to shield his private areas from view.
Troufanov, an Amazon electronics engineer, was abducted on October 7, 2023, along with his fiancée, mother, and grandmother from Kibbutz Nir Oz. While the female members of his family were released after about 50 days, Troufanov remained in captivity until February 2025. Upon his release, he learned that his father had been killed during the initial attack.
Reflecting on his time in captivity, Troufanov recounted the physical abuse he endured, including being punched, stabbed in the shoulder, and shot twice in each leg during his abduction. He was also struck on the head with a rifle, causing a severe injury. Throughout his imprisonment, he was often held in isolation, encountering another hostage only twice during the nearly 500 days. He described the experience as feeling "buried underneath the ground while I was still alive," leading to moments where he lost hope entirely.
Since his release, Troufanov has been undergoing both mental and physical rehabilitation. He faces challenges related to leg surgery but remains optimistic about dancing at his upcoming wedding with Cohen. He views this as a victory over hate and fear, emphasizing the importance of building a life together and moving forward.
