Russian Drone Strike on Ukrainian Passenger Train Kills Four

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned a Russian drone attack on a passenger train in the north-eastern Kharkiv region, which local officials report killed at least four people and left four others missing. The train, carrying over 200 passengers, was struck near the village of Yazykove on Tuesday.

"In any country, a drone strike on a civilian train would be considered in exactly the same way - purely as terrorism," Zelensky stated on social media, emphasizing the lack of military justification for targeting civilians. He noted that 18 people were in the carriage that was hit.

Images released by Ukraine's emergency services depict a severely damaged carriage engulfed in flames. The Kharkiv regional prosecutor's office reported that one drone directly hit a carriage, while two others exploded nearby. The train was en route from the western border town of Chop to Barvinkove in the Kharkiv region, passing through the regional capital. This route is commonly used by local residents and Ukrainian soldiers traveling to and from leave.

In a separate incident, officials in the southern port city of Odesa reported that overnight Russian drone attacks targeted energy and civilian infrastructure, resulting in three deaths and 25 injuries. City military head Serhiy Lysak stated that more than 50 drones were launched, causing several floors of a residential building to collapse and damaging other structures.

Russia has not commented on these incidents. In recent months, Moscow has intensified drone and missile strikes targeting Ukraine's energy and transport infrastructure, leaving millions without heating, electricity, and water during a harsh winter. Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated a full-scale invasion in February 2022, and Moscow currently controls approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory.

Despite ongoing aerial assaults, Ukraine-Russia talks were held last week in the United Arab Emirates, involving U.S. negotiators. While described as constructive, key territorial issues remain unresolved, with further meetings expected this weekend.
