Tesla has commenced offering public Robotaxi rides in Austin, Texas, without onboard safety monitors, marking a significant advancement in its autonomous vehicle program.
Previously, Tesla's Robotaxi service in Austin operated with safety monitors seated in the passenger seat to oversee the vehicle's performance. The removal of these monitors aligns with CEO Elon Musk's earlier statements. In December 2025, Musk indicated that unsupervised Robotaxi operations were imminent, stating, "Unsupervised is pretty much solved at this point. So there will be Tesla Robotaxis operating in Austin with no one in them. Not even anyone in the passenger seat in about three weeks."
The transition to fully autonomous rides began with internal testing late last year, where Tesla employees experienced rides without any onboard supervision. The current public rollout signifies Tesla's confidence in its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software's capabilities.
Despite this progress, Tesla's Robotaxi fleet in Austin remains relatively small. As of December 2025, reports indicated approximately 31 active vehicles in the city.
The removal of safety monitors is a pivotal step toward Tesla's goal of establishing a widespread autonomous ride-hailing network. However, the company continues to face scrutiny regarding the safety and reliability of its self-driving technology as it expands its services.
