Norwegian Prime Minister Addresses Trump's Greenland Demands Linked to Nobel Peace Prize
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre responds to President Donald Trump's message linking Greenland acquisition to Nobel Peace Prize snub.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has addressed a recent message from U.S. President Donald Trump, in which Trump linked his interest in acquiring Greenland to not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
In the message, Trump stated, "Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace... but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America."
Støre responded by emphasizing that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by an independent committee, not the Norwegian government. He stated, "I have clearly explained, including to President Trump, what is well known, that the independent Nobel Committee, and not the Norwegian government, awards the prize."
The exchange follows Trump's recent statements expressing a desire for the U.S. to acquire Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory. Trump has suggested that U.S. control of Greenland is necessary for national security.
Støre reiterated Norway's support for Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland and emphasized the importance of dialogue and respect for international law in addressing such matters.
