A snowstorm in Michigan on Monday resulted in a massive 100-vehicle pileup on Interstate 196 near Hudsonville, southwest of Grand Rapids. The incident, which occurred around 10:19 a.m., involved over 30 semitrailer trucks and prompted the Michigan State Police to close both directions of the highway.
Authorities reported numerous injuries but confirmed no fatalities. Stranded motorists were transported to Hudsonville High School for assistance.
The National Weather Service issued warnings for extremely cold temperatures and potential winter storms across several states, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. Forecasters also cautioned that freezing temperatures could reach as far south as north-central Florida and southeast Georgia overnight into Tuesday.
Motorist Pedro Mata Jr. described the hazardous conditions, stating he could barely see the cars in front of him due to blowing snow while driving at reduced speeds. He safely stopped his pickup truck and moved into the median to avoid potential rear-end collisions.
Officials have urged drivers to exercise caution, reduce speeds, and increase following distances in the treacherous conditions. The highway is expected to remain closed for several hours as crews work to clear the wreckage.
