High-Speed Train Collision in Southern Spain Results in Multiple Fatalities and Injuries
A collision between two high-speed trains near Adamuz, Spain, has resulted in at least 21 deaths and numerous injuries, prompting extensive emergency response efforts.
On Sunday evening, a high-speed train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed near Adamuz in Córdoba province, southern Spain, leading to a collision with an oncoming train and resulting in at least 21 fatalities and numerous injuries.
The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. local time when the rear carriages of the Málaga-Madrid train, operated by Iryo, derailed and crossed onto the adjacent track. At that moment, a Renfe-operated train traveling from Madrid to Huelva was passing on the opposite track, leading to a collision that caused both trains to derail.
Emergency services, including the Red Cross and military units, responded swiftly, working through the night to rescue survivors and recover bodies. The cause of the initial derailment is currently under investigation. Transport Minister Óscar Puente noted that the accident occurred on a straight section of track that had been renovated in May 2025, describing the incident as "really strange."
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences, stating, "Today is a night of deep pain for our country owing to the tragic rail accident in Adamuz." Rail services between Madrid and several major cities in Andalusia have been suspended as a result of the accident.
