DOJ Investigates Minnesota Governor and Minneapolis Mayor Over Alleged Obstruction of Immigration Enforcement
The U.S. Justice Department is investigating Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for allegedly obstructing federal immigration enforcement through public statements.
The U.S. Justice Department has initiated an investigation into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, focusing on whether their public statements have impeded federal immigration enforcement efforts. This probe centers on potential violations of a federal conspiracy statute.
The investigation follows a significant federal immigration operation in Minneapolis and St. Paul, which has resulted in over 2,500 arrests. Tensions have escalated, particularly after the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer on January 7. Both Walz and Frey have publicly criticized the federal response and questioned the exclusion of local authorities from the investigation into Good's death.
In response to the investigation, Governor Walz stated, "Two days ago it was Elissa Slotkin. Last week it was Jerome Powell. Before that, Mark Kelly. Weaponizing the justice system and threatening political opponents is a dangerous, authoritarian tactic." Mayor Frey commented, "This is an obvious attempt to intimidate me for standing up for Minneapolis, our local law enforcement, and our residents against the chaos and danger this Administration has brought to our streets."
The Justice Department has declined to comment on the investigation. The federal statute under consideration has been rarely used and has historical roots dating back to the Civil War era. Its application in this context raises First Amendment concerns, as it involves potential criminal charges based on political speech by public officials.
Aaron Terry, director of public advocacy for the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, remarked, "If criticism of the administration’s immigration enforcement operations is the basis for the investigation, it is blatantly unconstitutional and intolerable in a free society."
The situation continues to develop as both state and federal authorities navigate the complex interplay between immigration enforcement and constitutional rights.
