US Initiates Phase Two of Gaza Ceasefire Plan, Emphasizing Hamas Disarmament and Reconstruction
The United States has commenced the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire plan, focusing on Hamas disarmament, Gaza's reconstruction, and the establishment of a transitional Palestinian administration.
The United States has initiated the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire plan, emphasizing the disarmament of Hamas, the reconstruction of Gaza, and the formation of a transitional Palestinian administration. President Donald Trump announced that, with support from Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar, the U.S. aims to secure a comprehensive demilitarization agreement with Hamas, including the surrender of all weapons and the dismantling of every tunnel.
The plan introduces the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), a technocratic body tasked with overseeing Gaza's daily operations during the transition. Ali Shaath, a former Palestinian Authority deputy minister, has been appointed as the chair of the NCAG.
President Trump has also announced the formation of the Board of Peace, an international body mandated by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803 to support the administration, reconstruction, and economic recovery of the Gaza Strip. Trump described it as "the greatest and most prestigious board ever assembled at any time, any place."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized that Hamas's disarmament is a fundamental condition for the implementation of the peace plan. He stated that President Trump has been "unequivocal" that Hamas needs to disarm for the plan to proceed.
Despite these developments, challenges remain. Hamas has publicly asserted that it will only agree to disarmament as part of a negotiated process leading to the establishment of a Palestinian state, a condition that Israel rejects. Additionally, ongoing violence and humanitarian issues in Gaza continue to pose obstacles to the plan's progress.
