ICE Officer Shoots Venezuelan Man in Minneapolis Amid Rising Tensions
A Venezuelan man was shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis, leading to protests and heightened scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement tactics.
A Venezuelan man was shot in the leg by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in north Minneapolis on Wednesday night, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The incident occurred during a traffic stop when the man allegedly fled, crashed into a parked car, and resisted arrest. DHS stated that two other individuals emerged from a nearby apartment and attacked the officer with a snow shovel and broom handle, prompting the officer to fire a defensive shot, striking the man in the leg.
The man and the officer were both hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The two other individuals were taken into custody.
This shooting follows the fatal incident involving Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, who was shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis on January 7. Good's death has sparked widespread protests and intensified scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement tactics.
In response to the escalating tensions, President Donald Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act to deploy military troops to Minnesota. He stated, "If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don't obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT."
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz urged protesters to demonstrate peacefully and called on the president to "turn the temperature down." He emphasized, "We cannot fan the flames of chaos."
The recent incidents have led to increased federal presence in Minneapolis, with DHS Secretary Kristi Noem announcing the deployment of "hundreds more" federal agents to support ICE operations in the city.
Protests have erupted nationwide, with demonstrators demanding accountability and the removal of federal agents from Minneapolis.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an independent investigation into the latest shooting.
