ICE Agent Shoots Venezuelan Man in Minneapolis During Traffic Stop
A Venezuelan national was shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis after allegedly attacking the officer during a traffic stop; both the individual and the officer sustained injuries.
A Venezuelan national was shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in north Minneapolis on Wednesday evening following a traffic stop. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the incident occurred around 6:50 p.m. on the 600 block of 24th Avenue North.
DHS stated that federal officers conducted a "targeted traffic stop" on an individual from Venezuela who was in the U.S. illegally. The individual attempted to flee, crashing into a parked car before fleeing on foot. When officers apprehended him, two other individuals emerged from a nearby apartment and allegedly attacked the officer with a snow shovel and broom handle. In response, the officer discharged his firearm, striking the initial subject in the leg.
The injured individual was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer involved was also hospitalized; the extent of his injuries has not been disclosed. The two other individuals were arrested.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Police Chief Brian O’Hara held a press conference addressing the incident. Mayor Frey reiterated his demand for ICE to leave the city and state immediately, expressing support for immigrant and refugee communities. He urged the public to remain calm and follow official city channels for updates.
The shooting led to protests in the area, with demonstrators confronting ICE agents and law enforcement. Authorities deployed chemical irritants and flash bangs to disperse the growing crowd. Minnesota State Patrol established barricades to secure the scene.
This incident occurred exactly one week after the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE officer in Minneapolis, which has intensified tensions between federal immigration authorities and local officials.
