Federal Officer Shoots Man in Leg During Minneapolis Arrest After Alleged Shovel Attack

Summary

A federal officer in Minneapolis shot a man in the leg during an arrest operation after reportedly being attacked with a shovel and broom handle by the suspect and two others, according to officials.

A federal law enforcement officer shot a man in the leg during an arrest operation in north Minneapolis on Wednesday evening, following an alleged assault involving a shovel and broom handle, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The incident occurred around 6:50 p.m. local time when the officer attempted to apprehend a Venezuelan national, identified by DHS as being in the U.S. illegally. The individual reportedly fled in a vehicle, crashed into a parked car, and then attempted to escape on foot. Upon being pursued, the suspect allegedly resisted arrest and assaulted the officer.

During the struggle, two individuals emerged from a nearby apartment and reportedly attacked the officer with a snow shovel and broom handle. DHS stated that the original suspect then joined the assault, prompting the officer to discharge his firearm, striking the initial subject in the leg. All three individuals subsequently retreated into the apartment and barricaded themselves inside.

Both the officer and the man who was shot were transported to a hospital for treatment. The two other individuals involved were taken into custody. DHS emphasized that the officer acted in self-defense during the incident.

This event follows a separate incident on January 7, where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good in south Minneapolis, leading to heightened tensions and protests in the city.

The City of Minneapolis acknowledged the recent shooting, stating, "We are aware of reports of a shooting involving federal law enforcement in North Minneapolis. We are working to confirm additional details."
