Diesel Fuel Contaminates Gasoline at 46 Colorado Stations
An error at a fuel terminal led to diesel being distributed instead of unleaded gasoline to 46 Colorado gas stations, resulting in over 600 consumer complaints and vehicle issues.
An error at the HF Sinclair terminal in Henderson, Colorado, resulted in diesel fuel being distributed instead of regular unleaded gasoline to 46 gas stations across 11 counties between January 7 and 8. Affected retailers include Costco, King Soopers, Safeway, Murphy Express, and smaller stations.
As of Wednesday, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment's Division of Oil and Public Safety has received over 600 complaints from consumers experiencing engine issues. Deputy Executive Director Cher Haavind emphasized the importance of consumers reporting incidents to both the gas station and the state to facilitate the claims process.
Sinclair has provided a list of the affected locations and is conducting a thorough review to prevent future occurrences. The company stated that the issue was isolated and that bulk customers and distributors were notified immediately.
Consumers who suspect they received contaminated fuel are advised to contact the gas station where the fuel was purchased to initiate a claims process. Bringing receipts and repair records is recommended. Additionally, consumers should report the issue to the Division of Oil and Public Safety by submitting a complaint online or calling 303-866-4967.
All contaminated fuel has been replaced, and gas stations have resumed selling untainted fuel. The state continues to accept complaints and is reviewing its notification process to better alert consumers in case of future fuel contamination incidents.
