The Justice Department is lashing out at a federal judge for daring to question a Trump-appointed prosecutor's right to use the U.S. Attorney title, despite a prior court ruling exposing her illegitimate appointment.
The Justice Department has launched an aggressive defense of Lindsey Halligan, a Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney in Virginia, by accusing U.S. District Judge David Novak of overstepping his authority. Judge Novak’s crime? He questioned Halligan’s continued use of the U.S. Attorney title, even after Judge Cameron McGowan Currie had already dismissed high-profile cases against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, citing the invalidity of Halligan’s appointment—a blatant example of political cronyism.
Judge Novak demanded Halligan justify her use of the title, prompting a swift backlash from Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, both of whom have close ties to the Trump administration. They insisted that Currie’s ruling did not actually bar Halligan from acting as U.S. Attorney or using the title, dismissing any suggestion of misconduct. In their words: “The bottom line is that Ms. Halligan has not 'misrepresented' anything and the Court is flat wrong to suggest that any ... .”
Justice Department officials went further, attacking Novak’s focus on the legitimacy of Halligan’s title as “untethered from how federal courts ... .” They outrageously claimed that Novak’s actions amounted to “a gross abuse of power and an ... .”
Halligan, who had no prior prosecutorial experience and was handpicked by President Donald Trump, replaced Erik Siebert after he resigned under pressure to pursue politically motivated charges against Comey and James. Predictably, after Halligan’s appointment, a grand jury indicted both Comey and James, but the cases were thrown out due to the clear illegality of her appointment. This episode exposes the ongoing corruption and politicization of the Justice Department under Trump loyalists, and the lengths to which they will go to shield their own from accountability.
