Brown University Shooter's Videos Reveal Confessions and Lack of Remorse

Summary

Videos recorded by the Brown University shooter, Claudio Neves Valente, reveal his confessions to the December attacks and a lack of remorse, as released by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Massachusetts has released transcripts of four videos recorded by Claudio Neves Valente, the suspect in the December shootings at Brown University and the killing of an MIT professor. In these recordings, Valente confesses to the crimes, stating he had planned the Brown University attack over several years. He expressed no remorse, saying, "To say that I was extraordinarily satisfied, no, but I also don't regret what I did."

Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national and former Brown University graduate student, carried out the shooting on December 13, 2025, during a final exam review session in the Barus and Holley engineering building. The attack resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others. Two days later, he fatally shot MIT physics professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro at his Brookline, Massachusetts, residence.

In the videos, Valente denied any mental illness and rejected claims that he sought notoriety. He also refuted reports that he had spoken Arabic during the attack, asserting he was misunderstood.

Authorities linked Valente to the crimes through witness accounts and surveillance footage. He was found dead by suicide in a New Hampshire storage facility on December 18, 2025.

In response to the incident, the Trump administration paused the Diversity Immigrant Visa program, through which Valente had entered the U.S. in 2017. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem cited concerns over vetting processes as the reason for the suspension.
