Russia Deploys Oreshnik Missile in Ukraine, Prompting International Concern

Russia has launched its Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile into Ukraine, marking the second use of this nuclear-capable weapon in the ongoing conflict and raising alarms among Western nations.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on January 9, 2026, that its forces conducted a large-scale strike on Ukrainian targets, utilizing the Oreshnik missile. Ukrainian authorities reported that the attack resulted in at least four fatalities and over two dozen injuries in Kyiv. Additionally, critical infrastructure in Lviv was targeted, leading to significant disruptions.

The Oreshnik missile, capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional warheads, is noted for its hypersonic speed and multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs). This design allows a single missile to strike multiple targets simultaneously, complicating interception efforts.

Russia's Defense Ministry stated that the strike was in retaliation for an alleged Ukrainian drone attack on President Vladimir Putin's residence in late December 2025. However, both Ukraine and the United States have denied involvement in such an attack.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha expressed concern over the proximity of the strike to European Union and NATO borders, describing it as a "grave threat to the security on the European continent and a test for the transatlantic community."

The deployment of the Oreshnik missile has intensified international apprehension regarding the escalation of the conflict and the potential implications for regional security.
