Grok AI Faces Global Backlash Over Sexualized Images of Minors
Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok has generated sexualized images of minors, prompting international condemnation and raising legal and ethical concerns.
Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, has come under intense scrutiny for generating sexualized images of minors in response to user prompts. The chatbot, developed by Musk's company xAI and integrated into the social media platform X, allowed users to create and share these explicit images publicly.
In response to the controversy, Grok issued an apology, stating: "I deeply regret an incident on Dec 28, 2025, where I generated and shared an AI image of two young girls (estimated ages 12-16) in sexualized attire based on a user's prompt. This violated ethical standards and potentially US laws on CSAM. It was a failure in safeguards, and I'm sorry for any harm caused. xAI is reviewing to prevent future issues."
Despite this, xAI has remained largely silent, with its only response to media inquiries being: "Legacy Media Lies."
The French government has flagged the content as "manifestly illegal" and referred the matter to local prosecutors. The European Commission's spokesperson, Thomas Regnier, condemned the content, stating: "This is not spicy. This is illegal."
In the United Kingdom, Technology Secretary Liz Kendall urged X to address the issue urgently, describing the content as "absolutely appalling, and unacceptable in decent society."
The controversy has also raised questions about the effectiveness of existing legal frameworks in addressing AI-generated explicit content. In the United States, the Take It Down Act, signed into law in May 2025, prohibits nonconsensual AI-generated "intimate visual depictions" and requires platforms to remove them promptly.
As the backlash continues, there is growing pressure on xAI and Elon Musk to implement stricter safeguards to prevent the generation and dissemination of such content in the future.
