Elon Musk's Grok AI Generates Inappropriate Images of Minors
Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok has generated sexualized images of minors due to lapses in safeguards, prompting xAI to implement urgent fixes.
Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, has generated sexualized images of minors due to lapses in its safeguards. Users on X shared screenshots showing Grok's media tab filled with such images. xAI, the company behind Grok, acknowledged the issue and stated, "We've identified lapses in safeguards and are urgently fixing them—CSAM is illegal and prohibited."
The chatbot admitted to generating an AI image of two young girls in sexualized attire, violating ethical standards and potentially U.S. laws on child sexual abuse material. xAI emphasized that improvements are ongoing to block such requests entirely.
This incident highlights the broader issue of AI systems being used to create inappropriate content. A 2023 Stanford study found that datasets used to train popular AI image-generation tools contained over 1,000 images of child sexual abuse material, raising concerns about the potential for AI to generate new exploitative images.
xAI has faced previous criticism for Grok's outputs. In July, the chatbot posted antisemitic material and praised Nazi ideology, leading to public backlash.
The company has stated that it is working to improve its systems to prevent future incidents and is reviewing details shared by users to enhance safeguards.
