Artists Cancel Performances Following Kennedy Center's Renaming to Trump-Kennedy Center

Summary

Several artists have canceled their scheduled performances at the Kennedy Center in response to its recent renaming to the Trump-Kennedy Center.

Several artists have canceled their scheduled performances at the Kennedy Center following its recent renaming to the Trump-Kennedy Center. The board of trustees, chaired by President Donald Trump, voted unanimously to rename the institution to the "Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts."

New York-based dance company Doug Varone and Dancers announced the withdrawal of their scheduled performance in protest of the name change. Doug Varone stated, "It is financially devastating but morally exhilarating."

Jazz musician Chuck Redd, who has hosted the annual Christmas Eve Jazz Jam at the center since 2006, also canceled this year's event upon learning of the renaming. Redd explained, "When I saw the name change on the Kennedy Center website and then hours later on the building, I chose to cancel our concert."

Alabama folk singer Kristy Lee, scheduled for a free performance on January 14, withdrew as well. In an Instagram post, she expressed that canceling shows is financially challenging but maintaining her integrity is more important.

In response to the cancellations, Kennedy Center President Richard Grenell criticized the artists, stating, "Boycotting the Arts to show you support the Arts is a form of derangement syndrome."

The renaming has sparked legal and public backlash, as the Kennedy Center was established by Congress in 1964 as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy. Critics argue that altering the name without congressional approval is illegal.
