Trump and Zelenskyy Discuss Ukraine Peace Plan Amid Security Guarantee Concerns
U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in Florida to advance peace talks, with Zelenskyy expressing concerns over the proposed 15-year U.S. security guarantee.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met at Mar-a-Lago in Florida to discuss efforts to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump described the meeting as "excellent" and noted that significant progress was made toward resolving the war.
However, Zelenskyy expressed reservations about the proposed U.S. security guarantee, which is set to last 15 years. He indicated a preference for a longer-term commitment, suggesting a duration of 30 to 50 years to effectively deter future Russian aggression.
The discussions also addressed a 20-point peace plan, with both leaders acknowledging that while military aspects were fully agreed upon, certain issues, particularly concerning territorial matters, remain unresolved. Trump highlighted that disagreements over land are among the "thorny" issues still to be addressed.
Prior to the meeting, Trump held a two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which Putin reportedly expressed a desire to see Ukraine succeed. Despite this, challenges persist in reaching a comprehensive peace agreement, with key issues such as the status of the Donbas region and the control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant still under negotiation.
European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, welcomed the progress made during the talks and emphasized the importance of ironclad security guarantees from the outset.
The meeting occurred shortly after a significant missile and drone attack by Russia on Kyiv, underscoring the urgency of achieving a lasting peace agreement.
