A passenger train derailed near Nizanda in Oaxaca, Mexico, on Sunday, resulting in 13 fatalities and 98 injuries, according to the Mexican Navy. The Interoceanic Train, carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members, was en route from Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos when it left the tracks while navigating a curve.
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that five of the injured are in critical condition and has dispatched senior officials to assist affected families. Oaxaca Governor Salomon Jara confirmed that multiple government agencies are coordinating rescue and support efforts at the scene.
The Interoceanic Train, inaugurated in 2023 under former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is part of a broader initiative to develop infrastructure along the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, aiming to transform it into a strategic trade corridor connecting the Pacific and Gulf coasts.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the derailment.
