Thailand and Cambodia Sign Ceasefire Agreement to End Border Clashes

Summary

Thailand and Cambodia have signed a ceasefire agreement to halt weeks of border fighting over territorial disputes.

Thailand and Cambodia have signed a ceasefire agreement to halt weeks of border fighting over territorial disputes. The truce, effective from 12:00 PM local time on December 27, 2025, mandates an immediate cessation of hostilities, including all types of weapons and attacks on civilians and infrastructure. Both nations have agreed to freeze troop movements and allow displaced civilians to return home as soon as possible.

The agreement was signed by Thai Defense Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit and Cambodian Defense Minister Tea Seiha at a border checkpoint, following three days of discussions by military officials.

A key provision of the ceasefire stipulates that Thailand will repatriate 18 Cambodian soldiers held since July, provided the truce holds for 72 hours. Additionally, both sides have committed to refraining from provocative actions and the dissemination of false information to de-escalate tensions.

The conflict, rooted in longstanding territorial disputes, has resulted in significant casualties and displacement. Thailand reports 26 soldier and 45 civilian deaths, while Cambodia reports 30 civilian deaths and 90 injuries. Hundreds of thousands have been evacuated on both sides of the border.

The ceasefire also includes provisions for joint demining operations and cooperation against transnational crimes, such as online scams. Malaysia, instrumental in brokering earlier ceasefires, hailed the agreement, though Thai officials cautioned that the ceasefire would be treated as a test of Cambodia’s sincerity.

The next 72 hours are considered crucial for the success of the truce, with displaced civilians likely to wait before returning home to ensure their safety.
