Michigan Appoints Kyle Whittingham as Head Football Coach

Summary

The University of Michigan has hired Kyle Whittingham as its 22nd head football coach, signing him to a five-year contract through the 2030 season.

The University of Michigan has appointed Kyle Whittingham as the 22nd head football coach in the program's history. Whittingham, 66, has agreed to a five-year contract that extends through the 2030 season.

Athletic Director Warde Manuel highlighted Whittingham's leadership qualities, stating, "Kyle Whittingham is a well-respected and highly successful head coach who is widely recognized as a leader of exceptional character and principled leadership."

Whittingham joins Michigan after a 21-year tenure as head coach at the University of Utah, where he compiled a 177-88 record. His tenure included an undefeated 13-0 season in 2008, culminating in a Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Whittingham remarked, "Michigan is synonymous with tradition and excellence—both on the field and beyond—and our entire program is committed to upholding those values while striving for greatness together."

University President Domenico Grasso expressed confidence in the new hire, stating, "After speaking with Coach Whittingham and reviewing his record both on and off the field, I am confident he will bring dignity, integrity, and fierce competitiveness to the program, while serving as a powerful role model for our student-athletes and staff."

Whittingham's appointment follows the dismissal of former head coach Sherrone Moore earlier this month, after an internal investigation revealed an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

The Wolverines are set to face Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31, with interim head coach Biff Poggi leading the team for that game.
