Zelensky and Trump to Discuss Ukraine Peace Plan in Florida Meeting
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida to advance a U.S.-mediated peace plan aimed at ending the conflict with Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida this Sunday to discuss a U.S.-mediated 20-point peace plan aimed at ending the ongoing conflict with Russia. The meeting will also address U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine and economic cooperation.
Zelensky expressed optimism about the upcoming talks, stating, "We are not losing a single day. We have agreed on a meeting at the highest level – with President Trump in the near future. A lot can be decided before the new year."
The peace plan under discussion includes provisions for a demilitarized zone in eastern Ukraine, particularly in the Donbas region, and the area surrounding the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. This proposal involves the withdrawal of both Ukrainian and Russian forces, monitored by international peacekeepers. Zelensky emphasized that any agreement would be subject to a national referendum.
Despite these developments, key issues remain unresolved, including the provision of security guarantees for Ukraine and the fate of territories occupied by Russia since the 2022 invasion. Zelensky highlighted the technical challenges in enforcing and monitoring these guarantees and reiterated Ukraine's refusal to recognize Russian control over these areas.
In the lead-up to the meeting, Zelensky reported a "very good" Christmas Day phone call with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, during which they discussed innovative approaches to achieving peace. He appreciated the constructive approach taken by the U.S. mediators and noted the discussion of substantive elements critical to the peace process.
The Kremlin has confirmed continued engagement with Washington, with a senior aide to President Vladimir Putin conducting further telephone discussions with U.S. officials. Russia has committed to continuing negotiations, though it has not commented on Zelensky's offer to withdraw troops from the eastern Donbas if Russia reciprocates.
As diplomatic efforts intensify, both sides aim to address the complex issues surrounding the conflict, with hopes of reaching a comprehensive and lasting peace agreement.
