Kennedy Center's Christmas Eve Jazz Concert Canceled Amid Name Change Controversy
The annual Christmas Eve jazz concert at the Kennedy Center was canceled after the venue was renamed to include former President Donald Trump's name, sparking legal and public backlash.
The Kennedy Center's annual Christmas Eve jazz concert, a tradition spanning over two decades, was canceled this year following the addition of former President Donald Trump's name to the venue. Musician Chuck Redd, who has led the event since 2006, decided to call off the performance upon learning of the name change.
"When I saw the name change on the Kennedy Center website and then hours later on the building, I chose to cancel our concert," Redd stated.
The White House announced that the facility would be renamed "The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts," a decision reportedly approved by Trump's appointed board. This move has been met with legal and public opposition, as a 1964 law designates the Kennedy Center solely as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy and prohibits naming it after anyone else.
Critics, including Kennedy's niece Kerry Kennedy and former House historian Ray Smock, argue that altering the name without congressional approval is illegal. The Kennedy Center has yet to issue a public response.
