Zelensky and U.S. Envoys Discuss New Peace Initiatives
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a constructive call with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, exploring new ideas to advance peace efforts with Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported a productive conversation with U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Christmas Day, focusing on potential pathways to end the ongoing conflict with Russia. The discussion, lasting nearly an hour, introduced new ideas concerning formats, meeting arrangements, and timelines aimed at advancing peace efforts.
Zelensky expressed gratitude for the envoys' constructive approach and conveyed Christmas greetings to U.S. President Donald Trump and his family. He emphasized Ukraine's commitment to working diligently to bring the war to a close, ensuring that all documents and steps are realistic, effective, and reliable.
The Ukrainian delegation, including National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov, participated in the call. It was agreed that Umerov would continue detailed discussions with the American team later that day.
This dialogue follows recent U.S.-led peace negotiations, where Zelensky described the proposals as "quite solid," incorporating nearly 90% of Ukraine’s demands. The peace framework includes a 20-point plan, a multilateral security guarantee agreement involving the EU and U.S., and a bilateral deal with the U.S., potentially subject to U.S. congressional review.
Key elements of Ukraine's position include maintaining an 800,000-strong peacetime army, EU membership, and European military presence for air, land, and sea defense, backed by Washington. Despite diplomatic efforts, hostilities continue, with Ukraine targeting several sites inside Russia to disrupt its war efforts.
Meanwhile, Russia intensified attacks on Ukraine's energy grid, targeting facilities in five regions. Ukrainian defenses intercepted 58 out of 86 drones launched.
The Kremlin acknowledged analyzing proposals brought back from the U.S. by a Russian envoy, indicating ongoing diplomatic engagements.
As negotiations progress, both sides continue to address sensitive issues, aiming to establish a comprehensive and lasting peace agreement.
