CBS News Delays '60 Minutes' Segment on Deportees in El Salvador's CECOT Prison
CBS News postponed a '60 Minutes' segment investigating the deportation of Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador's CECOT prison, citing the need for additional reporting.
CBS News has postponed the airing of a '60 Minutes' segment that investigated the deportation of Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador's CECOT prison under the Trump administration. The segment, titled 'Inside CECOT,' was scheduled to air on Sunday but was removed from the lineup shortly before broadcast. A CBS News spokesperson stated that the segment 'needed additional reporting.'
Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, who reported the piece, expressed concern over the decision in an internal memo, suggesting that the postponement was politically motivated. She noted that the segment had passed legal and editorial reviews and had been promoted to the public prior to its scheduled airing.
Bari Weiss, the recently appointed editor-in-chief of CBS News, defended the decision, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive and fair reporting. In a memo to staff, Weiss stated, 'To win back [the public's] trust, we have to work hard. Sometimes that means doing more legwork... And sometimes it means holding a piece about an important subject to make sure it is comprehensive and fair.'
The segment focused on the experiences of Venezuelan migrants deported to CECOT, a prison known for its harsh conditions. Reports have emerged alleging that deportees faced severe abuse, including torture and sexual violence, during their confinement.
The decision to delay the segment has sparked discussions about editorial independence and the influence of political considerations on news coverage. CBS News has indicated that the segment will air in a future broadcast once additional reporting is completed.
